The Classic Series, of which this model is a part, takes guitars from some of the most important decades in Fender,s history and recreates them for today,s players, whilst ensuring they,re attainable. Although the Series usually concentrates on specific decades, the Fender Classic Series '72 Telecaster Custom breaks the mould by recreating a model from a specific year. This is due to the irregular nature of this model, which swaps out the usual dual single-coil pairing, for a single-coil/humbucker partnership.

          Unique Aesthetics

The pickup configuration is not the only oddity here, as the guitar as a whole seems barley recognisable compared with expected Telecaster-fare. That said the classic Tele body shape is still in attendance, carved from a piece of alder, and coated with a black polyester finish. This is where things start to change though.

A uniquely shaped, 3-ply, black pickguard has been incorporated that reaches from the lower bout, across to the upper bout of the Fender Classic Series '72 Telecaster Custom. It is the upper bout where the pickups selector switch has been moved to, which appears with an aged white tip, and the usual control knobs have been swapped out for skirted amp knobs, of which there are now four. Also of note here is the 3-saddle American Vintage-style strings-through-body bridge with chrome barrel saddles.

          Classic, C Shape Maple Neck

Although fitted with some unique additions, the Fender Classic Series '72 Telecaster Custom utilises a classic maple neck with the comfortable ""C""Shape profile and a gloss urethane finish, to ensure the easy playability that any Tele player would demand. This is kept in place with a three-bolt plate with Micro-Tilt adjustment.

Partnered with the neck is a rosewood fingerboard with a 7.25"" (184.1 mm) radius and a 1.650"" (42 mm) nut width. Across the fingerboard you,ll find 21 vintage-style-sized frets and white dot inlays, while at the nut is a bullet truss rod nut and Fender vintage ""F"" stamped tuning machines can be found at the headstock.

          Tradition Meets Humbucker

Coming back to another of the Fender Classic Series '72 Telecaster Custom,s eccentricities, it is fitted with a single-coil Telecaster pickup at the bridge, with a Fender Wide Range humbucker gate crashing at the neck. With this combination in your armoury, you have the tradition Tele tones you would expect, while the warmer, supercharged, growling humbucker sound is waiting in the wings, tempting you to flick that switch.

Talking of switches, this model is equipped with the usual 3-way pickup selector, but is has an addition two control knobs, giving you finite control over each pickup, as each has its own volume and tone knobs.
